You read it right, each of these specially woven sarees using — gold, silver copper and pure silk in the composition of the yarn, took nearly eight months of labour to produce.

Talking about the saris, Deepika says excitedly, “It was a huge challenge, one working with a government establishment, and then to evolve a complete gold jacquard in crepe-de-chine for the first time. But then the end result has been amazing”.

And each of the pieces is exclusive carrying a price tag of Rs1.5 lakhs to Rs3 lakhs.

Weighing about 1.5 kg, almost one gramme of gold was used for every strand of zar (thread), which is the highest amount of gold ever used in a saree.

'To give a vintage feel to the sarees, it was embellished with crystals and every saree has around 18-20 gross of crystals (each gross has 144 crystals),' informs Deepika.

Swarovski was sepecially commissioned to create crystal motifs according to the design of the jacquard motifs.

Further elaborating Deepika adds, there are thirteen designs and four story boards —The Indian Lotus, The Palmette, The Lily, and, the leaf scrolls. Each story board has a colour story. Colours are coral, rose, tan, cranberry, tangerine, pumpkin, russet, orange, burnt orange, chartreuse, light fern, antique moss, celery, warm olive, vivid green, sea green, emerald, Magenta haze, mauve raspberry, Red wood, Teal, blue-Curacao, Capri oriental blue and India ink.

And the blouses for the sarees are made again with technological innovation using a special lycra.

Launched recently in Bangalore by the Karnataka Chief Minister and in Delhi by Sharmila Tagore, the initial plan was to launch the exquisite saris as a wedding gift to Aishwarya Rai from the Karnataka Government and added to the fact she was getting married on ‘Akshaya Trithiya’, considered auspicious for buying gold, 'but the plans got stuck in bureaucratic hassles and finally it was gifted to the Chief Minister’s wife,' revealed a source.

Well, the lucky few who can manage to buy the limited edition pieces can literally be decked head to toe in Gold!!!
