and a perfectly-shaped nose. In addition to all that, it also usually means having a perfect figure, or at least being slim. But for character actress and comedienne Minnie Aguilar, her more than ample figure proved to be her lucky charm. Minnie, who made her mark in television by playing Jean Garcia’s sidekick, Coring, in the soap opera Pangako Sa ‘Yo, also made a few movies.

Then after that, her career seemed to dry up. The offers stopped coming. After giving it some thought, Minnie realized why. “It was because I lost weight,” says Minnie. Upon the advice of well-meaning friends, she dropped more than 10 pounds to supposedly look slim on screen and hopefully, get more jobs. But her slimming programme had the opposite effect. Instead of her getting more roles, she got less and less.

“The work stopped, and that made me sad,” admits Minnie, who recently marked a return to television with her role as Soling, the maid who acts as a surrogate mother to kids Flor and Reneboy in Maria Flordeluna. This is Minnie’s first major TV role since Pangako Sa ‘Yo, and she couldn’t be happier about it.

“I noticed that I started getting offers again when I gained back about 15 pounds,” said Minnie during the Maria Flordeluna press conference held at ABS-CBN’s 9501 restaurant. During the luncheon press con, Minnie had no qualms about digging into her food, even as the media and the TV cameras watched.

“It’s okay now, since I know this is the way that people like me,” she quipped with an amused smile.
