The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) said the explosion might trigger volcanic flows.

Volcanologists said they had monitored rumbling sounds of explosion-type quakes in Barangay (village) Sta. Misericordio, Sto. Domingo town at 3:04am and 3:06 am.

According to Philippine Volcanology (Philvocs) regional chief in Albay Dr. Ed Laguerta, aside from the tremors, sulfur dioxide emission was observed averaging 1,740 tonnes per day, which is above the normal level at 500 tonnes a day. For the past 24 hours, the volcano's seismic activity was characterised by nine explosion-type volcanic earthquakes, Laguerta said.

Philvocs' seismic network recorded two low-frequency volcanic quakes associated with shallow movement of magma, he added.

Laguerta categorised the activity as "moderate unrest." The scientist said as a precautionary measure, Philvocs has raised "Alert Level 2" over the areas surrounding Mayon Volcano.

Albay Gov. Fernando Gonzalez, who is the chairman of the PDCC, has called for a meeting with city and town mayors to discuss and plan out disaster-preparedness measures in case Mayon erupts. The PDCC also directed the local executives to strictly enforce the 6-km "permanent danger zone" around the volcano to ensure the safety of the residents around it.
