A psychological drama, The Nest looks like another must-see. A keen study of the mental torment a dysfunctional marriage can wreak, Jude Law stars as Rory a British husband and father who initially lives in the States with his American wife and kids. Rory convinces his partner, Allison (Carrie Coon) to uproot the unit to England for new opportunities. When she arrives at the new Surrey pad, everything immediately seems off. Can the fantasist Rory really deliver all he claims? When Allison confronts him with the hard facts he cannot, the situation begins to spiral. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 88%
It’s rare a movie starring Michael Caine flies under the radar, but this one caught us completely unawares. Based on a book by the ever-popular Jacqueline Wilson, this film sees a family holidaying with their long lost English uncle Trent (Russell Brand) in the British countryside. The stately manor is home to a number of historical artifacts and taxidermied rare species of which the Trents have been collectors for generations. When the kids head down to the beach and discover a wish-granting magical creature (voice by Caine), Trent can think of nothing better than adding it to his menagerie. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 50%
Home Alone for the GTA video game generation, Becky is yet another welcome addition to this week’s line up. It looks like Friday will contain at least a triple-feature! Starring Kevin James as tough escaped convict Dominick (seriously) leading a group of his prison buddies to a lake house to retrieve a mysterious key, upon their arrival they find the dwelling already occupied. 13-year old Becky (Lulu Wilson) and her dad (Joel McHale) are seemingly on a bonding trip when, unbeknownst to Becky, dad’s new girlfriend shows up. Becky storms off into the woods just as Dominick and his gang arrives. When Dom discovers the key may be with Becky, he tortures dad in order to encourage her to return. Return she does although not before setting up more than a few painful booby traps. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 71%
