The Princess and the Frog

The family film features the voices of Anika Noni Rose, Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Peter Bartlett and Terrence Howard.

The script follows prince Naveen as he is transformed into a frog by the evil scheming voodoo magician Dr. Facilier. The frog prince mistakes a girl named Tiana for a princess and has her kiss him to break the spell. However, the kiss doesn’t break the spell, but instead turns Tiana into a frog as well.

Kirk Honeycutt writes in her review of the 97-minute feature for the Hollywood Reporter that “Disney brilliantly rediscovers hand-drawn animation and the value of story.” The movie has played host to a largely positive response.

Sherlock Holmes

OPENING THIS WEEK, a day before its world release, is British filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s screen adaptation of novelist Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

The thriller stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong and Eddie Marsan in major roles and has been distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Set in 1891, the plot of the feature follows title character and famed sleuth Holmes (Downey, Jr.) and his usual wing man Watson (Law) as they attempt to foil a conspiracy to destroy Britain and uncover the identity of the villain who hatched it in the first place.

In her review of Sherlock Holmes for The Guardian, Catherine Shoard writes the flick off as a “cinematic mystery that baffles in all the wrong ways” and a “high-end hack work” that could have been made by anyone. The 139-minute has so far received a mixed to positive response from critics.

Trivia:

· The trademark fedora that is worn by Guy Ritchie’s Holmes in the film was hand picked by none other than Robert Downey Jr.

· Downey Jr. has already been nominated for a golden Globe in the category of best actor in a motion picture for his role in Sherlock Holmes.
