KYLA DEFENDS HER SHOW

Of late, singing contests for children have gotten a bad rap. People have pointed out how wrong it is to make children below the age of 10 sing songs about heartbreak and passion or about emotions they don't understand or haven't experienced.

Kyla, local music's R & B Princess, who herself was a product of the Tanghalan ng Kampeon and who is now hosting the show Popstar Kids on QTV 11, a sister station of GMA-7-says that on Popstar Kids, they purposely don't dress the contestants in gowns and don't make them wear heavy make-up so they'll really look like kids.

Regarding the kids' choice of songs, Kyla says that the problem sometimes is that there are not too many contest pieces for children, so they have to resort to singing songs that might not be considered age-appropriate. But the show's musical director Danny Tan makes sure to give the kids pointers on their performance. The show also discourages parents of the contestants from watching inside the studio. That way, the kids are more comfortable and at ease.

Kyla says that another good thing that shows like Popstar Kids does is that it builds the kids' self-confidence.

It only becomes harmful when the kids are forced to join or perform against their will.

In Kyla's case, she really wanted to join. She first tried to join Tanghalan ng Kampeon when she was 10 years old. "I joined five times, but I always ended up in second or third place," she says.

On her fifth and last attempt, she finally made it as Grand Champion. "I wanted to prove that I could win, because even my classmates were starting to tease me about it," recalls Kyla.

But without the contest, Kyla says she wouldn't be where she is now. After winning on Tanghalan ng Kampeon, Kyla auditioned for a spot on German Moreno's That's Entertainment, and that's where it all began.

Now, she is acclaimed as local music's R & B princess. She's had several hit songs and albums, and is currently working on her next one. Kyla is also busy touring the country as part of the Backroom Caravan, a summer musical extravaganza featuring her with her fellow Backroom artists.

"Hopefully, I'll start recording soon," she says. We're sure that's something even her fans are looking forward to.
