John Estrada plays the bad guy

HE HAS already won one Best Actor award for his role in the teledrama Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay. But with his return to the soap opera genre as Col. Gary Alvarado, half-brother of Col. Leo Alicante in Maria Flordeluna, John says he has no expectations.

“Honestly, I really don’t expect anything [whenever I take on a role]. If people appreciate my work, that’s great. If they don’t, that’s okay too. I just do my best every time,” says John who, ironically, began his showbiz career as a comedian on the sitcom Palibhasa Lalake. He became famous for his inability to speak Tagalog, and got a lot of laughs because of it.

People only began to see him as a serious actor when he played a killer in Calvento Files: The Movie. After that, a slew of roles in soap operas followed, including Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, Hiram and finally, Vietnam Rose opposite Diamond Star Maricel Soriano.

His new role as Col. Gary Alvarado is going to be another acting challenge for John, because it is a villain role.

This time, he’s playing the bad guy. Gary is Leo’s half-brother and rival in the military. Although he is the legal son, he still does not have his father’s acceptance and affection. He will want to take everything away from Leo, including his wife Jo.

“This guy is the biggest villain in this soap,” explains John. “He messed so many things up, meddled in so many relationships, he’s insecure and competitive to the point that he considers his half-brother a rival.”

The role of Col. Gary Alvarado was not in the original Flordeluna TV drama that starred John’s ex-wife Janice de Belen in the title role. Janice was then only 11 years old.

But John says that Maria Flordeluna, which will premiere on ABS-CBN soon, is not based on the TV show, but on the hit radio series of the 1970s.

With this role in Maria Flordeluna, questions have started to crop up about John’s lovelife. The show, after all, was partly inspired by the same show that “made” his ex-wife.

John, who was formerly linked to Vanessa del Bianco, says he is loveless at the moment. He spends as much time as he can with his four kids by Janice, but as for a relationship, that’s not in the cards right now.

So he’ll be loveless on Valentine’s Day? “That’s okay,” jokes John. “I’m used to it.”
