IN RECENT weeks, there was much speculation surrounding actor-TV host Ryan Agoncillo. The debate centred on whether Ryan would accept the offer of GMA-7 to host the second season of Philippine Idol, or whether he would stay put in the Kapamilya network.
There was much reason for Ryan to consider GMA-7’s offer. After all, he hosted the show’s maiden season on ABC-5, and had become so identified with it that when it was announced that GMA-7 bagged the rights to air its second season, people began wondering: was Ryan going to be signed as host again? More important, would ABS-CBN allow it, considering he was officially a kapamilya, appearing in the primetime drama Ysabella opposite girlfriend Judy Ann Santos?
Muddling the situation even more were reports that ABS-CBN was offering Ryan a job hosting the second season of Pinoy Dream Academy, a show that is very similar in format to Philippine Idol. The move was widely seen as an attempt to counter whatever plans GMA-7 may have had to lure Ryan into its fold.
At the recent press conference for Ysabella — which is about to open its third chapter — Ryan’s manager Noel Ferrer was asked if they had made a decision as to which offer Ryan would accept. Ferrer was evasive, but to those who read between the lines, the answer was obvious. “Where are we right now?” asked Ferrer. When members of the media replied, “ABS-CBN,” Ferrer said, “That’s it.”
