‘Inception’ top film overseas for third weekend

LOS ANGELES - “Inception” took the No. 1 spot at the foreign box office for a third consecutive weekend on Sunday as the international total for the sci-fi thriller rose to $314 million.

Weekend action of $34.6 million from 59 markets was led by France ($3.3 million), and Spain and South Korea with $2.9 million each. The top market overall remains Britain with $44.7 million, followed by Japan with $30.8 million.

New North American champ “The Expendables” also opened in about 20 foreign markets through a myriad of distributors. The Sylvester Stallone actioner opened at No. 1 in Australia ($2.5 million) and No. 2 in Spain ($1.7 million).

“Toy Story 3” was No. 2 overall after a $22.7 million weekend drove its total to $539.3 million, Disney’s biggest cartoon of all time overseas. Top market is Japan where the threequel captured the No. 1 spot for a sixth round for a local total of $95.8 million.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” bounced to $15 million from 41 territories, taking its haul to $72.5 million. The Nicolas Cage movie opened at No. 1 in France with $4.7 million.

“Step Up 3D” followed at No. 4 with $13.2 million from 20 markets, good for a two-week tally of $32 million. “Salt” shook $9.5 million from 48 markets, raising the overseas total to $83.2 million.

Other foreiogn totals include: “Shrek Forever After,” $441 million; “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” $381 million; “Knight and Day,” $139 million; “The Karate Kid,” $107 million; “The A-Team,” $83 million; “The Last Airbender,” $69 million; “Despicable Me,” $56 million; “Grown Ups,” $50 million; and “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” $22 million.
