Well, pour it did for Angelika, but in a different way, with her latest role in the ABS-CBN fantaserye Pedro Penduko At Ang Mga Engkantao. In the show, Angelika plays a dual role as a kindly doctor and as Kalagua, the nemesis of Pedro and his “engakantao” friends, six teenagers blessed with an assortment of special powers. The cast is headed by Matt Evans, who will be joined by Jake Cuenca, Makisig Morales, Melissa Ricks, Denise Laurel and Eda Nolan, and of course, Angelika as their common enemy.
It is a different role from those she’s played before, but Angelika says she is looking forward to it. Initially though, her reaction when offered the role was “What? Another kontrabida role?”
Angelika explains her hesitation: “I had just come from doing Bituing Walang Ningning, and I had my apprehensions about doing another kontrabida role so soon. I didn’t want to get typecast in these types of roles, and I was hoping for something different. And when I found out the show was a fantaserye, I didn’t want to do it, because I thought I would have to wear prosthetics or a costume, and I know how uncomfortable that can be. That’s why I had second thoughts.”
But after attending the story conference and listening to director Erick Salud (who also directed her in Bituing Walang Ningning) explain the show and her character, Angelika decided to say yes. She had been doing too many soap operas, and needed a break. This would be the perfect one.
It will be remembered that Angelika started her career as a soap opera star. She did two for ABS-CBN—Book Two of Mara Clara and Esperanza—and her more recent projects, like Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas and Bituing Walang Ningning, have also been soaps.
“I’ve been doing soaps for a while, and that can be very draining on the emotions,” says Angelika. “Plus when they told me that my character here would have a dual role, that’s when I began to be interested. I felt challenged, because my character would have to be both good and bad. And the fact that the show is not a soap opera means that my character would not be a typical soap villainness. There is a little fantasy mixed in, and that makes it more interesting.”
