I  could identify with her because she is a young girl; she wants a lot of things from life. She wants to fall in love; I think every young person would identify with her at that point. There are a lot of flaws to every human being and also to every character that you play. That’s what makes the person three-dimensional, more real and more approachable. There are a lot of things that I would like and dislike in myself if I had those characteristics, but as a character, I absolutely love Bittu because she is so human and so amazing.

Your Masakali song was a hit even before the film was released. How was it shooting for it?

Initially, I was hesitant about the bird but after a while I got used to it. For the song, Masakali, the dove was actually supposed to be on my shoulder, but it just jumped up on my head! I was like okay – there is this weird something sitting on my head. But the shot came out really well.

What’s your favourite song from the film?

I really like Rehna Tu and Dil Gira Dafatan. But then I also love Genda Phool and the title track. So I really can’t make up my mind as to which one is my favourite!

One heard that none of the stars were given a vanity van during the shoot. Were you okay with that?

It was not about the vanity vans. Rakeysh wanted a more communal and convenient atmosphere. And I think he achieved that by making us do everything together. Everyone got on well with everyone else. We knew everything that was happening in everyone’s life and we were always together and that works for the film; it shows on-screen.

Did you get offended when someone called you Masakali?

I never got offended, I got embarrassed. People keep calling me Masakali and Kabootri and I get embarrassed and affected by it, but I enjoy it when it is out of affection.

Did you know that Rakeysh thought you were a brat from Juhu?

I always knew that because he always told me that! But once he met me, he realised that one should not judge a book by its cover. So, I think both of us learnt something from that.

How is Rakeysh Om Prakash as a director?

He is amazing, a very sweet guy and I really enjoyed working with him. He is extremely chilled out.
