But while some celebrities leave an emphatic impact with their garb, some are caught sporting outfits that even the plainest of all Janes and the most average of all Joes would cringe to put on.

At the end of the year, City Times brings you the top three Bollywood stars that managed to meet the mandatory fashion quotient and the three who fell dismally short of their obligations.

Vidya Balan:

Balan is notorious for wearing unflattering outfits. Be it her disastrous wardrobe in ‘Heyy Babyy’ (a fashion malfunction she placed completely on the incapable shoulders of director Sajid Khan) or her unattractive attire in ‘Kismat Konnection’; she has received some well-deserved flak for her dress sense. And it is fairly obvious with this tell ‘tail’ outfit exactly why. The length of the garment, the unsuitable nail polish and the hideous bangles; not one aspect of it works in her favour.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan:

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan certainly has the perfect figure - toned and svelte - and the pink shade of her dress is undoubtedly a fashionable colour this season. But put the two together, and somehow bystanders are in for a dazzling disappointment. Be it the style or the cut; something about this gown just does not make Jaya Bachchan green with envy.

Salman Khan:

A star who has been getting away with fashion catastrophes for years unnoticed is Salman Khan. More often than not his attitude, his larger-than-life personality and the rumours surrounding his lifestyle eclipse his horrendous dress sense. But on close examination, the inappropriateness of his ensemble is practically palpable. The hair (recently sported as pony-tail-bound catastrophe), the ripped jeans, the pointy shoes and the shirt; nothing clicks.

Katrina Kaif:

Draped in a sexy sari or outfitted in a becoming evening cocktail dress; Katrina Kaif is almost always well turned out. It is not just her porcelain-doll-like looks (though they help); it’s her impeccable dress sense coupled with her elegance and grace, that make her a fashion diva. In this black sari, Kaif proves that she can look just as alluring in ethnic wear as she does in western garb.

Preity Zinta:

Be it a red carpet event at a flashy film festival or a sporting event at the Indian Premier League, Preity Zinta is well-dressed for almost every occasion. Barring her ordinary black jacket worn at DIFF (but we heard that an unsightly rash was involved there), Zinta almost always manages to dazzle onlookers with her presentation. It’s rumoured that she prefers to adhere to safe blacks. But why experiment when something works so well?

Hrithik Roshan:

Hrithik Roshan’s golden-boy looks catapulted him into the hearts of millions of women. But it’s not just his appealing exterior and humble interior that proves alluring to his female fan base. His befitting casual attire is hugely responsible for his magnetism. In these uber-casual and comfortable clothes, Roshan looks ready for just about anything; a date with his wife or a shoot with daddy-dearest.
