The 15,500-square-foot (1,440 square metre) property consists of a barn-style main house, three townhouses designed by architect Frank Gehry, a hundred-year-old cottage, a lap pool and a pool house.
“With its undulating aluminum and steel exterior, the main residence is an ode to the industrial look,” said Jade Mills of Beverly Hills-based Coldwell Banker Previews International, who has the listing with Jane Gavens. “This property represents a truly rare find. It is an artist’s ‘dream-come-true’ with its light-filled interiors and its artistic heritage.”
Hopper, the star and director of the cult film “Easy Rider,” displayed his vast art collection at the compound and entertained his Hollywood pals there despite its location in a gang-infested neighborhood. The area has since been gentrified.
Hopper died of cancer at home on May 29, aged 74.
The 4,900 square feet (455 square metres) main house, completed in 1987 by architect Brian Murphy, can be bought — along with the 1,355 square-foot (126 square metre) cottage, the pool and the pool house — for $3.95 million.
The three townhouses, built in 1981, range in size from 1,143 to 1,330 square feet (106-123 square metres), and can be bought for $750,000 to $1.05 million each.
