Loud booms were also heard in the region, which the military said came from missile interceptors that had been launched
And finally, a trio of rose, orange oil and nasturtium water ice. Who knows what delights might be on the gastronomic menus served up over the next few days.
It can hardly have escaped the notice of every foodie and gastronome in town that the Festival of Taste began its culinary extravaganza last night in the Ballroom of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. '1001 Nights meet the Stars' event was a chance to meet some of the world's best-known chefs and sample the results of their collective skills. Not to mention being amused by a few Arabian horses (inedible) and fire-eating (inadvisable).
The kitchens of the Burj Al Arab, Al Qasr, Mina Al Salaam, Jumeirah Beach et al will, for a few nights, be home to a line-up that includes Michel Roux, Gary Rhodes and Jean-Paul Novelli. But that's not to ignore the talents of James Martin, Sam Leong, Gina Koutropoulos and Ben Sisley, Hans Haas and Yannick Alleno. It's an eclectic mix that spans the palate from modern British cooking to South East Asian flavours and Australian innovation.
Notably absent from this pantheon of chefs might be Heston Blumenthal from the Fat Duck in Bray who has the world puzzled with offerings like snail porridge, sardine on toast sorbet and smoked bacon and egg ice cream. And perhaps Ferran Adrià and Juli Soler from El Bulli at Cala Montjoi north of Barcelona; El Bulli has been voted as the world's best restaurant. But with a taster's menu that runs to 25 plus courses and delicacies such as 'barnacles and sea foam' that might be gilding the lily.
In any event, the festival will celebrate the joys of food and drink in a style that Dubai has rarely seen. The week holds connoisseur dinners with each of the individual chefs, several of whom still hold coveted Michelin Stars: Roux - 3, Alleno - 2 and Haas - 2. And for true exclusivity, there's the opportunity to indulge in the 'ultimate dinner party' which only allows four diners. At AED 100,000 it's not surprising that transport by helicopter and Bentley is part of the treat.
Another exclusive is the opportunity to take part in a cooking class under the expert eyes of Novelli, Roux or Rhodes. Once again the numbers are limited to four but how many budding chefs can there be? And if you're not a member of the elite, there still remain such sybaritic affairs such as the 'Sparkle, Caviar and Diamond Evening' or the 'Galaxy of Stars'. And if (and it's a big if) you have enough room in your overfilled stomach, there's the final 'Jazz Brunch' on May 26.
