For UAE movie fans yesterday's announcement theatres will once again be open to the public from May 27 is yet another welcome sign of an imminent return to some form of social familiarity. Unlike previous crises, the COVID-19 pandemic has perhaps better highlighted the fundamental need for entertainment to provide a counter to prevailing uncertainty and help us overcome anxiety. While streaming platforms and Video On Demand services have undoubtedly played their part, a trip to the cinema for a traditional movie experience will no doubt taste just a little sweeter in the coming weeks.

In preparation for reopening, Emaar Entertainment's Reel Cinemas chain has revealed in a media release its list of hygiene measures to which it will be adhering and criteria for any visiting patrons. The group has also announced ticket prices will remain unchanged for an initial picture roster which includes Bloodshot, The Invisible Man, Angrezi Medium and Bad Boys For Life.
General health and safety measures include: temperature checks prior to entry, mandatory wearing of face masks, mandatory online ticket purchasing, two metres social distancing, no under 12s or over 60s, 30 per cent in-cinema seating, disposable cutlery for snacks.
