Movie Mania: Dumb and Dumber (1994)

It seems inconceivable now that Dumb and Dumber was met with mixed reviews upon its initial release, even helping to net Jim Carrey a ‘Razzie’ nomination for Worst New Star (alongside his roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask).

Now considered a comedy classic, the movie sees brainless buddies Lloyd Christmas (Carey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels) tracking down the beautiful Mary Swanson (Holly) after she accidentally leaves a briefcase in Lloyd’s possession.

The duo hit the road from Rhode Island to Aspen to return Mary’s case – unaware that it is stuffed with ransom money for her husband Bobby, who has been kidnapped.

Written and directed by the Farrelly brothers, this monsoon of moronic mirthmaking remains their magnum opus 20 years on – with a sequel set to finally reunite the original stars due out later this year.

Starring: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Karen Duffy

Mole of the Emirates

Overheard from conversations around Dubai this week…

>>“Eating this food is making me hungry”

>>“Red. White. Green. I love you all!”

>>“I thought everyone had a primary school picture of them holding a barn owl”

>>“Pythagoras has given us hope”

Love Connection: Olivia Munn & Gianluigi Buffon

We’re pairing up a revered athlete with a confessed geek this week – although Love Connection isn’t quite veering into She’s All That territory just yet.

While Olivia has become a pin-up for nerds everywhere, thanks to her Star Wars obsession and love of cosplay, Gianluigi has long been a national icon in his native Italy for his goalkeeping heroics for both Juventus and the national side.

What the duo have in common may not be obvious, but we’ve found something that could get them talking. The Newsroom star Olivia is a regular fixture for ‘hotness’ lists in Men’s magazines like FHM and Maxim, while in 2004 Gianluigi was named in Brazilian icon Pele’s list of the 125 greatest footballers of all time.

Just for Laughs

My mum laughed at me when I said I was going to build a car made out of spaghetti. You should have seen the look on her face when I drove pasta.

Celeb Trivia

Upcoming British pop band Rixton had a recent US top 20 hit with Me and My Broken Heart, but lead singer Jake Roche already knew plenty about showbiz before his breakout hit.

The 21-year-old’s dad is Shane Richie – known for his TV presenting work on shows like Run the Risk, and for his role as Alfie Moon on soap opera Eastenders.

Shane has something of a musical background too, having performed in musicals and even hitting the UK number two spot in 2003 with Wham charity cover I’m Your Man.

Jake’s mum meanwhile is Coleen Nolan from pop act The Nolans, best-known for their 1979 hit I’m in the Mood for Dancing and a host of the daytime talk show Loose Women.

Jake has also acted in soap opera Emmerdale, although he’ll be busy with his music career for the foreseeable future – as Rixton continue their American odyssey under the watchful eye of Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun.

You tube: All systems Go

American Indie-Pop band OK Go continue their tradition of creating mind-bending, visually astounding music videos with their latest single The Writing’s On the Wall. In a single take, a camera pans around a warehouse filled with intriguing contraptions as the group try their best to bamboozle the viewer. Good song too.
