both personally and as an actor. Having left the ABS-CBN Talent Centre — where he was under contract since he was nine years old (he's 20 now) — Carlo is beginning to spread his wings artistically and become more experimental in his choice of projects.

Recently, he starred in a digital film entitled Tuli (Circumcision) where, for the first time in his career, he played a really mature scene with co-star Desiree del Valle, another ex-ABS-CBN talent. Tuli, directed by Auraeus Solito, was named Best Picture at the Cinemanila International Film Festival.

According to Carlo, his decision to leave the ABS-CBN Talent Centre was born of a desire to "reinvent" himself as an actor and singer. Viva reportedly promised to give Carlo's band Theory a break by signing them up for a recording contract.

Under Viva, he is now getting the chance to do the kind of films he's always wanted to do. Plus now, there is the chance of getting his band's album out. Composed of Carlo and his friends, the band specialises in alternative music typified by artists like Matchbox 20 and Incubus.

He says he will always be grateful to ABS-CBN, but he can't be doing those kinds of roles forever. "I'd like to do more mature, offbeat roles. I'd like to do something different, from an artistic point of view. I don't want to be glamorised onscreen. I find those roles more challenging," says Carlo.

Maybe because he's older now, he is more confident. Of course, there is still some nervousness there, but Carlo says he's ready to take on the challenge.
