baShe is bold, brave and beautiful and does things others would never dare to do, not even in their wildest dreams. But the most unexpected thing she's done by far, says Gretchen, was to come out with her very own album-yes, you read that right-Gretchen Barretto is now officially a recording artist.

Star Records recently launched Gretchen's album 'Unexpected' at the 9501 executive dining lounge of ABS-CBN, and Gretchen treated the everyone to a mini-concert by performing three of the cuts on the album and singing snippets from some of her favorite songs throughout the two-hour press launch. Among the songs in her repertoire were two from the Broadway musical Miss Saigon (The Last Night of the World and I'd Give My Life For You) and A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, which she used to sing to daughter Dominique, who's turning 13 this year.

"Call me Gretchen Karaoke-I just love singing," laughed the actress, who can actually do more than just carry a tune and who acquired the gift from her father, who loves to sing. Younger sister Claudine (who once dabbled in theater) and a younger brother can also sing. Gretchen started out the way most people do, by singing at home or in the bathroom. Whenever she had friends over, she would invite a pianist and sing songs.

Then after she gave birth to Dominique, Gretchen took voice lessons under the tutelage of Jerry Olaguer, specialiSing in Broadway tunes. But as she grew older, she shifted to pop-jazz and standards.

The 12 songs on her Unexpected album are all her favourites. They include the carrier single Please Don't Ask Me, Fly Me to the Moon, A House Is Not A Home and Moon River.
