The couple separated temporarily early this year after a series of controversies, starting with Cesar being linked to Brazilian actress and model Marianna del Rio. Shortly after that, Cesar’s sister Ched, who is based in London, accused Sunshine of driving their mother Emma away from the home she shared with Cesar, driving a deeper wedge between the couple. It reached a point where Cesar and Sunshine eventually separated, with Cesar leaving their conjugal home. Their decision saddened a lot of people, especially those who had witnessed their grand showbiz wedding.

Over the next few months, the couple worked out their issues away from the prying eyes of the media. After exchanging accusations and counter-accusations, after a brief appearance by Sunshine on The Buzz (where she was even accompanied by her lawyer), things seemed to have returned to normal—and not a moment too soon. If they had waited longer, it’s hard to tell how their marriage might have ended up.

“We really wanted to save our marriage. I guess we were just both committed to it. We realised we had to be strong for the kids,” said Sunshine in an interview during the launching of a clothing brand that she endorses, along with fellow actresses Ana Roces, Jodi Sta. Maria-Lacson and Malaysian actress-model Carmen Soo.

Cesar and Sunshine have three children, all girls. Now, with peace restored in their home, all of them are living together again, and Sunshine couldn’t be happier. “What we went through was really painful for all of us. I know it was painful for Buboy (Cesar’s nickname) too, because he was torn between us, his family, on one hand, and his sister on the other.”

But Sunshine said she never forced her husband to make a choice between one or the other. “I would never force him to do anything, especially not something like that,” she says. “I wanted it to be his decision entirely.”

With all her domestic issues settled, we asked Sunshine what happens to her career. Will she be returning to television, or the movies, anytime soon? “I don’t know yet,” says Sunshine, who was last seen in Palos, an action-drama that coincidentally starred Cesar in the title role originally made famous by 60s screen icon Bernard Bonnin. “Right now, I just want to focus on our family.”
