Baby you can drive my car

FOR A MAN viewed as a champion of the environment, it appeared to be a curious choice of car for Sir Paul McCartney.

Waiting for him and his girlfriend Nancy Shevell when they arrived in Los Angeles was a gas guzzling 5.7litre sports car.

She hopped in the passenger seat of the midnight blue C5 Corvette after they emerged from the city’s airport while Sir Paul, dressed in grey suit and sunglasses, took the wheel. The £25,000 car’s huge engine dwarfs those of even the Porsche 911 and Ferrari Spider and its fuel efficiency is an extravagant 18mpg — unless 66-year-old Sir Paul has been supplied with a modified version to suit his green image.

It’s debatable however whether the Corvette will ever leave quite the carbon footprint of the hybrid Lexus that he imported from Japan last year. The £84,000 Lexus LS600h was sent to the former Beatle from Japan as a gift from the car maker.

It featured a powerful five-litre V8 petrol engine but, because the car is a hybrid, it produces relatively low carbon emissions.

However, environmental campaigners pointed out that more than 14tonnes of carbon dioxide were created flying the Lexus from a factory in the Far East. Miss Shevell has been dating Sir Paul since 2007, after he announced his separation from Heather Mills. Sir Paul refused to comment on his love life as he left the US airport.
