This film has caused friction between the Behl and Bachchan families who have been close friends for years.
Buzz is that while the Bachchans have been gossiping about Goldie’s lack of directorial abilities, Goldie feels that Abhishek’s over-interference lead to the film’s disaster. A source from Goldie Behl’s production house reveals, “Abhishek who has no idea of filmmaking would constantly insist on giving Goldie inputs thus causing more confusion to the already lack- lustre film. If this was to be Abhishek’s block- buster after his marriage they should have chosen a more experienced director, instead of now blaming Goldie for the disaster. After all, Goldie’s last film was a flop too. Goldie blames the Bachchans for taking over the publicity and promotions of the film by over -hyping the product which raised the expectations of the public.
“The question the industry is asking is why did Goldie cast Abhishek as a ‘superhero’? A producer who wishes to remain anonymous reveals, “There are so many more fit and muscular actors in the industry; why did he have to choose Abhishek who from no angle can play a superhero? Abhishek was a complete misfit in the role, even Ash was more convincing as a warrior princess in Jodha Akbar. The film shows that Abhishek took his superhero image too lethargically. He did not take lessons in sword-fighting as did Hrithik for Jodha-Akbar nor did he work- out his body to suit his role. Look what an older guy like Shah Rukh did for his one song in Om Shanti Om? He made the public sit up and look at his six pack. Abhishek does not put in much effort and seems to be taking his career too much for granted.”
Post-marriage Abhishek hasn’t had a single release and Drona was a make it or break it situation for him. Says an insider, “It was unfortunate, that the Bachchans invited everyone personally for this film’s premiere thus making it very embarrassing for everyone. The hype surrounding the film made things even worse, what with Ash flying down all the way from Brazil for her husband’s big night and the huge premier hosted by none other than the Bachchans. Abhishek also claimed that this was his dream film. If it was so important then he should have worked hard on the stunts and his expressions! He seemed completely bored and washed out in the film.”
Abhishek’s next release is Dostana and going by the looks of it, industry pundits predict that John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra could walk away with all the acclaim; and like after the release of Dhoom 2, this time too Abhishek may go unnoticed. In fact, John’s well-toned body has already made him the talking point of the film, even Priyanka has been creating waves for her svelte and sultry look in the film.
Being a Karan Johar production, the film promises to be good. And even if Abhishek does well in the film it will not make waves in his career. Filmmakers feel that the actor needs to take his career more seriously, “Mani Ratnam’s Yuva proved that Abhishek is a good actor but he needs to get choosy about the films that he signs. He has to choose good scripts, roles and directors who will tap his talent. He should not just sign any film that comes his way.”
Yet another filmmaker is of the opinion that Abhishek needs to hire a manager to look into his career and help him grow out of his family’s shadow, “It seems that the Bachchan family as a whole advise Abhishek on his every move, thus not letting him grow as an individual. He has been in the industry for a long time and it’s time he makes his own decisions. Their advice is definitely not helping him!”
