A marital dilemma

IT’S MARITAL mayhem at the movies this week. Bank cashier Santosh (Rajpal Yadav) marries Shanti (Neha Dhupia) but the couple is reduced to minor tiffs and squabbles a few months down the line.

Neighbours Khurana and wife (Anupam Kher and Rati Agnihotri) try to mediate but do not succeed. Things are no better at work for Santosh. His boss Prem (Aashish Choudhary) always picks on him but it transpires that he has troubles of his own. He too is in the throes of a marital dilemma and is unhappy with his demanding wife Khushi (Amrita Arora). Things go from bad to worse for the couples but since this is a comic caper (well, at least on paper) there’s not much fear of a tragic ending. For added spice (for want of a better word) we have Rajpal Yadav endowed with a vivid imagination: his favourite pastime is to imagine others’ wives as his own.

Clearly marriage is a bed of ruses in Rama Rama Kya Hai Dramaaa, directed by debutant Chandrakant Singh. It’s a flabby script reeking of chauvinistic overtones and ill defined characters. The dialogues are inane and the music, mediocre. To add to our woes, the cast goes merrily over the top. Rajpal Yadav does manage to lift some scenes with his comic timing but for the most part he is a shadow of his usual hilarious self. Aashish Choudhary fails to make an impact while Neha Dhupia and Amrita Arora impress even less. Anupam Kher and Rati Agnihotri are wasted in silly roles. Sanjay Mishra, as the bank peon, raises a few laughs.
