chTHE FIRST Chinese Art Exhibition was inaugurated on April 9 in Dragon Mart. The opening ceremony was attended by Chinese dignitaries including the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in the UAE, Gao Yusheng, Chinese Commercial Consul General Zhang Yi and President of the China Calligraphy and Painting International Communication Centre of China, Zhang Shu Zhong. Zhang Shu Zhong said in his opening speech, "One of our aims is to introduce Chinese art to Dubai as a way of increasing cultural integration."

The Opening Ceremony was also attended by David Thurling, the Managing Director of Nakheel Real Estate Development, who also own Dragon Mart. He welcomed the Chinese dignitaries and thanked all those involved in organising the event. He termed the exhibition as being a very special exhibition of Chinese culture and art and thanked the China Calligraphy and Painting Centre for bringing their collection to Dubai. In his speech he said, "It is our responsibility of building a relationship between the community of China and the community of the UAE. We are looking forward to announcing many future events and activities that will be coming up and will be playing a role in the cultural exchange."

The exhibition, which ended yesterday, showcased six well-known artists from a number of regions in China. More than 120 original pieces were on display including calligraphy, ceramics and traditional Chinese paintings. Also on display were contemporary paintings using traditional Chinese art techniques and mediums such as calligraphy - however in a more abstract and freehand interpretation.
