He told Arabies Trends magazine :" I am most willing to cooperate, to give assistance and to move the process forward, because I think we need all the economies, and particularly one the size of Saudi Arabia, to be part of this organisations as soon as possible."

He acknowledged lack of progress in these negotiations, but said the impediments can be solved. Except for Saudi Arabia, all the other AGCC states are WTO members.

Mr Panitchpakdi expressed the hope of the Middle Eastern countries participating seriously in the ongoing negotiations at the WTO. He added:" I think we are seeing increasing interest coming from the Middle Eastern areas in the trade negotiations this time around. Apart from the services sector, discussion might involve energy sector also. Many countries are interested in sectors like telecommunication and tourism, and hence we are seeing their full participation in the ongoing talks."

Mr Panitchpakdi's interview has been published in the special issue of the magazine that has interviews of 33 global leaders from the worlds of business, politics and the arts. Those featured in the March edition include Shaikh Hamad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Economic Department, Abdul Rahman Abdulaziz Tuwaijri of Saudi Arabia's Supreme Economic Council, Mohammed Al Abbar, Chairman of Emaar and Abdulhadi Shayif of Saudi Arabia's National Commercial Bank.
