US stocks fall; Wal-Mart, rising oil weigh

NEW YORK - US stocks extended losses on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq falling 1 per cent and the Dow industrials down more than 100 points, pressured by disappointing sales from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and resurgent crude oil prices.

Traders said a rebound in crude oil prices revived worries about inflation and the potential fallout on corporate profits, with US front-month crude oil futures up more than 1 per cent, or 88 cents, at $72.25 a barrel.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 103.18 points, or 0.91 per cent, at 11,175.43. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index

was down 10.29 points, or 0.80 per cent, at 1,269.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 23.49 points, or 1.06 per cent, at 2,186.88.
