KABUL — Afghanistan will hold its first major Conference on Regional Economic Cooperation beginning Sunday for two days in Kabul, according to a Press statement issued yesterday by the Foreign Ministry.
The Regional Economic Cooperation (REC) conference will be jointly chaired by the Afghan government and the United Kingdom as the current president of the G8.
The participants will include the six neighbouring countries of Afghanistan plus United Arab Emirates, India, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The participant countries will be represented at the ministerial and senior official level, said the statement. "The conference offers an exceptional opportunity for the region to enhance security and promote economic development," the statement said, adding that it will also focus on economic cooperation in areas of concern to the countries of the region, including electricity and energy generation, transport, transit trade promotion and opportunities and border management.
