UAE-Sudan trade rises to Dh494 million

SHARJAH - Sharjah's Economics' Development Department offered its strong support for the economic alliance between the UAE and Sudan in order to take advantage of the development opportunities there.

This came following the discussions Chairman of the Sharjah Department Shaikh Tariq Al Qasimi had with the Sudanese investment minister Ahmed Omar Badr which also included economic partnership between the two countries. Shaikh Tariq said: "Trade is constantly growing between the UAE and Sudan from Dh185 million in 1997 to Dh494 million in 2001 and we look forward to increase this in future."

He added: "Sudan with its agricultural and oil resources has the strength and stability to increase its current growth average of 5.5 per cent." During the meeting other issues were also discussed including plans to open a permanent exhibition to promote UAE products in Sudan through Sharjah's Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Other investment opportunities including Sudatel has to offer were also promising. Shaikh Tariq said: "Sudatel is registering a good growth average and Etisalat's 9 per cent stake in Sudatel is also helping the UAE investors' trust."
