DUBAI - With just two months to go before the Terminal 5 opens at London's Heathrow airport, British Airway's Middle East chief Robbie Baird yesterday emphasised the importance of Dubai and Abu Dhabi routes to the airline.

He told Wam in a statement that "the UAE enjoys unique tourist merits, making it a tourist hub for British and European tourists. hence, the BA increased its trips to the country to match huge tourist growth, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai."

"The world's second biggest airline is placing greater emphasis on services to the Middle East as the market for passengers to and from this region grows at pace," Baird said.

"While our transatlantic routes are still a huge source of business for the airline, with over 40 flights a day to North America, our three daily services to Dubai and daily flight to Abu Dhabi are performing very strongly. Travel to and from the Middle East is growing significantly, well into double figures, and there is work going on to look at where to place extra flights in the future," he added.

Baird noted that there is no doubt that the UAE routes would continue their growth - once terminal 5 opens at Heathrow on March 27 - because customers will enjoy the convenience of arriving at what will be considered as the best terminal on the planet."
