The number of people unemployed shot up by 888,000 from the equivalent figure 12 months previously to 3.65 million, the figures from the statistics institute Tuik showed.

Tuik compiled the data from a study of 91,000 people.

The unemployment rate for the whole of 2007 was put at 9.9 percent, and the number of unemployed at 2.33 million.

Experts said that the figures produced by Tuik, although the best available, were flawed and that the rate might be closer to 20 percent at least.

The government said on Tuesday that the economy was likely to contract by 3.6 percent this year.
