Customs and Free Zone Corporation- Dubai World (PCFC), through its Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department, has certified more than 300 green building projects since 2008 to reinforce the concept of sustainability, a Press statement issued by Trakhees said.

Two projects have been accredited with gold certification and two other projects with silver certification as per the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) standards. It is expected that the number of certified projects would increase to 10 by the end of 2010, the statement said.

Trakhees-EHS is tasked with reviewing the plans and drawings of the projects during the design and construction phase for the purpose of verification and providing assistance to customers in the process of applying for green building status.

The department has realised the need for providing good infrastructure to facilitate the establishment of green building projects, and therefore clarified all the related regulations and laws and work mechanism for its customers, the statement said.

Trakhees-EHS also taken the initiative to establish a technical materials committee which included suppliers of sustainability products and services for the smooth functioning of the system. The department has also adopted a regulatory programme to create awareness among customers about various green building standards and policies.

It is expected that this initiative will help customers come forward with ideas and give more details about their sustainability-related products, and develop the concept of green buildings by exchanging practical information and expertise.

To set an ideal model, the department has begun a series of simple sustainability projects within its premises with respect to water, energy and renewable technologies, which is testament to its commitment to sustainability in favour of all its stakeholders and customers, the statement added.
