Top field for Habtoor soccer

DUBAI - The second Al Habtoor Football Championships kicks off this weekend at the Emirates International School, Jumeirah, with 16 sides eyeing a slice of the Dh60,000 prize fund.

Each team will be representing a leading UAE company in this year’s fortnight-long competition, which is being held under the patronage of the chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor.

Individuals associated with the six-a-side outfits, along with members of the organising committee, did the honours at the draw on Sunday morning, where those taking part were split into four groups of four.

A quartet of competitors (Al Habtour Group, Al Habtoor Motors, Dubai Duty Free and Top One Security A–One) were awarded pre-designated slots as the first names in each respective pool phase.

Al Habtoor Group duly face Al Tayer, Carrefour and Diamondlease, while Al Habtoor Motors got pitted against Al Torabi Group, Egypt Club Ajman and Top One Security B – One in their quests for progression.

Dubai Duty Free will need plot a path through Al Ghurair Arabian Aluminium, Egyptian Stars and Jumeirah Team to make any further headway, whereas Al Habtoor Leighton, Kazo Interiors and Pooya stand in the way of Top One Security A – One.

Tournament manager Atef Mousa, confirmed there would be 34 games played in total across four rounds (qualifying stage, quarter-finals, semis and final), with all matches – including the final on May 6 – officiated by three international referees.

“We were very pleased with the positive feedback we received after last year’s championships – both from the companies that participated and the spectators,” the vice chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Al Habtoor Group, Mohammed Al Habtoor, said.

“We decided to organise it again this year and to encourage the players and the supporters to get involved by featuring really good prizes.

“The Al Habtoor Football Championships are part of our commitment to supporting sports-related events of all kinds.”

This 2011 edition has a number of exciting prizes for both those performing in – and watching – the frenetic action.

Merely by showing up at the event, attendees will be in with an opportunity to win the grand prize of a Mitsubishi Lancer 2011, courtesy of the main sponsors, Al Habtoor Motors.

The outright winners shall not only receive the championship trophy, but a case prize of Dh30,000 as well. The runners-up will get the second-place trophy along with a cash prize of Dh20,000. The side that emerges victorious from the third/fourth place play-off shall claim a bronze trophy and, accordingly, a cash prize of Dh10,000. Each player in those three teams will also receive medals in the appropriate colour (gold, silver or bronze) depending upon their final position. There shall be a number of other prizes too, including awards for the best player and side.
