Samsung has unveiled two new gaming monitors that push the limits of speed and resolution, aiming squarely at enthusiasts and competitive players. The new displays — the Samsung Odyssey G6 G60H and Samsung Odyssey G8 G80HS — take different approaches to performance, with one focusing on ultra-high refresh rates and the other delivering an extremely sharp 6K display.

Samsung Odyssey G6 G60H targets esports players

The Odyssey G6 G60H is designed for competitive gaming, particularly esports titles where every frame counts. The monitor features a 27-inch IPS panel with a native 1440p resolution and an astonishing 600Hz refresh rate.

However, Samsung has pushed things even further with a dual-mode feature. When switched to 1080p resolution, the display can reach a remarkable 1,040Hz refresh rate, which Samsung claims is a world’s first.

While hitting such extreme frame rates requires extremely powerful hardware, the monitor supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and is NVIDIA G-Sync compatible. This should help ensure smoother gameplay even when a system cannot fully match the monitor’s maximum refresh rates.

Given these specifications, the G60H appears to be aimed primarily at competitive players in fast-paced shooters, where ultra-high refresh rates can provide a smoother and more responsive gaming experience.

Odyssey G8 G80HS delivers a massive 6K display

For gamers who prioritise resolution over raw speed, Samsung’s Odyssey G8 G80HS offers a completely different experience.

This monitor features a 32-inch IPS panel with an impressive 6K resolution (6,144 x 3,456) — delivering around 156 per cent more pixels than a standard 4K display. Despite the massive resolution, the monitor still offers a 165Hz refresh rate, making it suitable for high-end gaming and creative workloads.

The display also includes a dual-mode option that switches to a 3K resolution at 330Hz, giving users the option of higher frame rates when needed.

Samsung has not yet revealed pricing for either monitor, but given their ambitious specifications, both displays are expected to target the premium gaming monitor segment.

Attendees of the upcoming Game Developers Conference in San Francisco may get an early look at the monitors in action.
