According local media reports, Systra, a Paris-based international consultancy and design firm for mass transit and rail, will undertake a four-month study on track alignment for the first phase of the project in Oman, which will run from the capital city of Muscat to the northern port city of Sohar, which is close to Dubai.

Once the local study is done, the Supreme Committee for Town Planning will then issue tenders for the design of the first phase — a 230 kilometre rail link.

GCC leaders, in their 29th summit last December in Muscat, had reviewed the follow-up reports on the common railway project. The member states are expected to endorse a $14 billion investment for the project after the presentation of a feasibility study some time later this year. The Muscat-Sohar rail link is of strategic importance because it is one of the main business corridors of the sultanate. A number of real estate projects are happening in between the two cities. Besides this, the Port Sohar and the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) have launched massive developments in Sohar.
