The brilliant 19-year-old finished third behind winner and compatriot Pol Espargaro but it was enough to ensure he clinched the world title one race before the final Moto2 GP, at Valencia on November 11.

In July it was announced that the Suter rider would replace retiring Australian two-time world champion Casey Stoner in the champion Repsol Honda team for the 2013 MotoGP season.

Marquez is one of the fast-rising moto stars and two years ago won the 125cc world championship before finishing second behind German Stefan Bradl in last year’s Moto2 world championship.

Marquez only needed to finish 14th or better in Australia to claim this season’s Moto2 world crown and narrowly failed to pip Australian Anthony West across the finish line in a thrilling dice for second place behind Espargaro.

Marquez holds a 39-point lead over Espargaro heading into the final race of the season in Valencia with a maximum of 25 points available.

He led early here but was content to stay out of trouble as Espargaro went on to win the Phillip Island Moto2 GP by almost 17 seconds from West.

Espargaro claimed his fourth win of the season after starting off from pole for the seventh time this year.

It was back-to-back podiums for West, riding a Speed Up, after he finished runner-up the previous week in Malaysia.
