The Kongsberg Norcontrol IT and its partner — National Advanced Systems Company (NASCO) — have won a contract to supply VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) and high performance radar systems for eight ports in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Ports Authority will utilise the new systems to detect vessels including tankers and small craft surrounding the local area of Dammam Port, Jubail Industrial Port, Jubail Commercial Port, Jeddah Islamic Port, Yanbu Industrial Port, Yanbu Commercial Port, Duba Port, and Jizan Port.

"The new systems for the Saudi Ports Authority are due for installation and operation by the end of 2006," Steve Guest, Regional Sales Director, Kongsberg Norcontrol IT, said in a statement made available to Khaleej Times.

"Each of these ports has its own unique maritime domain awareness requirements. For example, radar propagation in the Red Sea is completely different to that in the Arabian Gulf and our radar solutions need to have the correct processing to optimise radar detection in each of these areas," Guest explained.
