‘Senna’ director to make film for London Olympics

The London Olympics are getting a celluloid twist, with special films and screenings including a new movie by the director of an acclaimed documentary on the late Brazilian race car driver Ayrton Senna.

London-born Asif Kapadia, whose portrait “Senna” global praise, says his short film, “The Odyssey,” will explore the relationship between the British capital and the Olympic games.

New films have also been commissioned from directors Mike Leigh, Lynne Ramsay and the duo of Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini.

The Olympic film program announced Friday also includes a rerelease of “Chariots of Fire,” a 1981 tale of British triumph at the 1924 Games that won four Academy Awards.

The films will play across Britain this summer as part of the London 2012 arts festival. The Olympics run July 27-Aug. 12.
