Merlin Digital recently launched its latest E-Book reader, taking the reading experience to its next level.

This gadget isn’t just for people who love the printed word. Personally, I’m not really into reading books, but the Merlin E-Book could give me a reason to be.

The Merlin E-Book uses E-Ink, a type of electronic paper that mimics the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. The contrast is clear enough not to strain your eyes — unlike your run-of-the-mill computer screen — and you can adjust the text size to suit you best.

It has a sleek design. At only 8 millimetres thick, it’s convenient to hold and hang on to if you decide to move around your favourite reading spots.

Operation of the Merlin E-Book is simple, thanks to its five-way navigation key and well-placed menu buttons on the side. Don’t worry about jumping from page to page. With the touch of a key, the device gives you a calculator-like ‘Go To’ function, providing easy page searching.

That said, it’s pretty cool to think that you can do away with having to physically turn pages, especially with those really thick books. And if you don’t want to tire your eyes, no sweat; this gizmo supports audiobooks as well. Happy listening.

The Merlin E-Book also has a music player, allowing a user to listen to MP3 files while reading, or just simply tuning in while taking a break from a story and relaxing. A little mixing and matching of your books and music can provide an especially conducive reading atmosphere.

How many books can the Merlin E-Book hold? With its 512MB of internal memory and SD card slot of up to 4GB, you don’t have to worry about leaving your fattest novels behind, as it can store thousands of pages.

The Merlin E-Book connects conveniently to your computer via USB 2.0, and transferring files to and from it is simple. Merlin could probably incorporate some more magic and provide wireless transfer, with Bluetooth at the top of the list.

In any case, the Merlin E-Book provides readers with an entertaining and convenient way to enjoy their favourite pastime in this latest phase of the Digital Age.
