RAK sees rise in socio-economic development

RAS AL KHAIMAH - The RAK Emirate has witnessed tremendous socio-economic developments throughout the previous years that turned it into an emerging industrial, tourist, trade and economic hub not only in the UAE but for all the AGCC countries.

To provide investors as well as visitors an insight of this boom, the RAK Economic Department (RED) has recently issued the Statistical Year Book for the year 2004 that gives accurate account of the emirate’s achievements in the agricultural, industrial, construction, trade, and tourism, educational and healthcare fields. The estimates that the emirate‚s total number of population has increased from 165 thousand in 1999 to 195 thousands in the year 2003, 115 are males and 80 females and 52.3 per cent of them are living in the rural areas. The total number of the economically active residences is 60281; only 1057 of them are unemployed. Despite the enormous depletion of the underground water level, the emirate has witnessed an agricultural expansion and the number of farms has increased from 4209 in the year 1999 to 4465 that produced 270807 tones of frui ts, vegetables and field crops.

As for the construction sector, the RAK Municipality has issued 2709 construction licences in the year 2003, compared to only 2062 in the year 1999.

The road construction and maintenance works and other measures carried by the emirate‚s authorities has help enormously in reducing car accidents from 1354 in the year 1999 to only 838 in the year 2003.

The book also indicates that the non-oil exports of the emirate has jumped from only Dh489.10 million in the year 1999 to be at Dh1242.02 million in the year 2004. Whereas, the imports value has increased from Dh 740.21 million in 1999 to Dh 1171.69 million in 2003.

As indication to the emirate’s commitment to provide its residency with comprehensive healthcare services, the number of beds in the three state-owned hospitals has been increased from 399 to 433, number of doctors and dentist from 191 to 235 and surgical operations from 10914 to 11016.
