Qatar Telecom pledges QR2.8 million to SDC

DOHA — Qatar Telecom (Qtel) — the country's sole telecommunications provider — has pledged QR2.8 million to the Social Development Centre (SDC) for an 18-month project that will provide business opportunities to some 50 Qatari nationals during its first phase.

The money will be used to establish the Qtel Small Enterprise Support Unit at SDC, which is part of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF). The unit will open on September 1st. The funding agreement was signed between Qtel's CEO, Dr Nasser M Marafih, and the QF Vice-Chairman, Dr Saif Al Hajri, and witnessed by: Amal Al Mannai, General Manager, SDC, Diya Salman, the SDC Spokeswoman, and Qtel. Executive Director- Group Communications, Waleed Mohammad Al Sayed.

Amal Al Mannai gave a presentation on the objectives of the new support unit, explaining that it will be based at the SDC and will implement the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) training programme, developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Dr Saif Al Hajri said that the SIYB project has already been implemented successfully in around 80 countries. Two ILO officials, and two Qatari nationals from the SDC, will work on developing a specific, adapted, curriculum for the training of Qatari nationals.
