Online book sales rise

DUBAI - Book sales regionally and internationally have increased dramatically in the past year, thanks mainly to the success of the Harry Potter series and a revival of interest in the Lord of the Rings, according to Bharat Jashanmal, managing director of online retail site Hadaiya.com.

Jashanmal pointed out that the largest growth has been in online book sales in the region.

"Stock numbers can be a challenge for traditional book stores, as we saw with the launch of the latest Harry Potter book. Buying online, however, ensures you can pre-book your copy and won't be disappointed," Jashanmal added.

According to Jashanmal, book sales in the region rose by as much as 25 per cent in 2003, but the most startling increase was found online, where regional book sales increased by an estimated 50 per cent across all Internet retailers in 2003.
