A statement issued by OMV said yesterday that this increase was made through plant modifications and further drilling of wells. So far, the joint venture has invested about $350 million in overall field development, it said.

Sawan gas field is located in Sindh in the central Indus basin about 500-km from Karachi. The share of OMV which is operator of the field has increased from 110 million cubic feet per day to about 120 MMCFD when production from another field Miano is also taken into account. The field was discovered in 1998 and started supplies to the gas distribution system in 2003. With this, OMV has become the biggest international natural gas producer in Pakistan in terms of operated volumes, the statement said. As the operator of Sawan and Miano gas fields as well as the Kandanwari processing facilities, OMV is now responsible for operating more than 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day or 600 mmcfd.

In the Sawan gas field, OMV has about 20 per cent shareholding. Other partners include Pakistan Petroleum Limited (26 per cent), Eni AEP Limited (24 per cent), Government Holdings (22.5 per cent) and Moravske Naftove Doly (7.9 per cent).

On the other hand OMV's major competitor in central Europe- Hungarian oil and gas company, MOL- has decided to expand its business in Pakistan by drilling more exploratory wells.

In addition, MOL was also working on a number of potential projects after having made significant hydrocarbon discoveries in Tal block of NWFP.

The company has started supplying more than 50 million cubic feet per day natural gas from its Manzalai-1 (Gurguri) well to SNGPL at Kohat. It said it was also producing 500 bbl per day crude oil from Makori-1 besides substantial quantity of gas. It has recently announced successful completion of tests for the third well called Manzali 2. in the block.

MOL is the leading integrated oil and gas group in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the largest company in Hungary in terms of sales and a market capitalisation of more than US10 billion. MOL Group is one of the world's largest oil and gas companies with operations in 9 countries, and the Group's refinery capacity is over 20 million tonnes.

MOL Group's core activities are exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas and gas products, refining transportation, storage, and distribution of crude oil products in retail and wholesale markets, Import transportation, storage, and wholesale trading of natural gas and other products.

MOL is working in Pakistan through its subsidiary MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co. B.V. since April 1999. The Petroleum Concession and Exploration License was granted to MOL (TAL Block no. 3370-3) in North West Frontier Province with the Joint Venture partners, Oil & Gas Development Corporation Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Government Holdings (Pvt.) Limited (GHPL) and Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) for Exploration of Oil & Gas.
