MPLS appeared for the first time six years ago, when several companies including Cisco, IBM and Toshiba decided to apply it over the Internet. It was later introduced to telecommunication networks.

The five-day workshop, in the southern city of Salalah from August 19 and organised by Omantel in cooperation with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Arab Centre of Excellence, will highlight the important elements of MPLS technology, its applications, the special services it will provide, as well as other technical characteristics of related parties including organisers, operators and consumers.

It will be attended by more than 100 top officials of telecommunications regulatory authorities, service operators and providers, system engineers, network planners and Internet experts and trainers from the Sultanate and other Arab countries. The seminar, titled 'MPLS Technology and Applications', will be inaugurated by Dhofar Municipality President Shaikh Salem bin Ofeit Al Shanfari.

Omantel promotes MPLS application

Omantel is promoting the application of MPLS and the dissemination of its use in all public and private institutions in a big way as part of the country's e-government project which emphasises the expansion of the use of technology in all fields on a large scale.

Omantel's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mohammed bin Ali Al Wohaibi underlined the company's commitment to keeping "abreast with recent developments and advancements in telecommunications and information technology." It also seeks to turn the Sultanate of Oman into a digital society, which, in turn, will speed up the clearance of transactions and save a lot of effort, time and money.

Director of the Arab Centre of Excellence Ghulam Al Bulushi noted that the workshop assumed "great importance in light of the recent and successive developments in telecommunications and information technology." These, he added, included the restructuring and liberalisation of the sector "in a highly competitive environment with closely linked services and technologies."

He also stressed that with the growth of demand for various services, there was a need to develop human resources at all levels. "The objective is to boost the transformation process and adaptation to the new environment," Bulushi said.

Omantel has been using MPLS in the services it provides to institutions and companies because of its uniqueness in terms of the fast and high quality transfer of data. The technology is also noted for its secrecy and the protection of information from loss or damage.
