The flights to Sydney, with a stopover in Bahrain, will be on Gulf Air aircraft - Airbus A320 and A340 jets.

Olympic, which the government plans to relaunch as a slimmer, debt-free carrier, renaming it Olympic Airlines, ended its loss-making flights to Sydney and Melbourne in November last year in an effort to rein in costs.

Its decision to drop the flights was criticised by Australia's large Greek community.

Olympic's chief executive said the new airline, expected to start operations in December, plans to drop flights to Copenhagen and Barcelona.
