According to official figures, women make up over 72 per cent of university students in the country, with many of them opting for the information technology and engineering disciplines.

Dr Nadia Buhannad, assistant professor at the UAE University and managing director of Sikologia Consulting, who will be overseeing the assessment and selection of the winners of the UAE's first major award for business women, said that the increasing number of educated women has had repercussions in the employment market. In fact, women in the UAE are spread across the entire civil service and account for around 40 per cent of the total number of employees.

She said that higher education had empowered women to aspire for responsible positions or launch business ventures in diverse fields and achieve new heights. The achievements of these women will be recognised by the Emirates Businesswomen Award instituted by Shell in conjunction with Dubai Quality Group.

She added: "The launch of this award is an extremely significant moment for UAE women. Sikologia Consultancy will ensure that effective procedures are followed in selecting the winners so that we can create precise role models for society."
