Murthy retires as chairman August 20 on turning 60 years.

According to the company's notification to the stock exchanges yesterday, the board of directors has resolved to appoint Murthy as additional director and non-executive chairman of the board with effect from August 21.

The board, however, did not name Murthy's successor as the company's new chairman. Consequently, the company's current chief executive officer (CEO), president and managing director Nandan M. Nilekani has been re-designated as CEO and managing director with effect from August 21.

The board, which met here to approve the financial results for the first quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal (2006-07), has promoted current chief operating officer (COO) and deputy managing director S. Gopalakrishnan. He has been re-designated as the company's new president, COO and joint managing director with effect from August 21.
