McDonald's same-store sales up 7.1 pct in Jan

NEW YORK - McDonald's Corp MCD.N said on Monday that worldwide sales at its restaurants open at least 13 months rose 7.1 percent in January, driven by strength abroad and sending its shares up 1.4 percent premarket.

The world's largest hamburger chain said January same-store sales rose 5.4 percent in the United States, 7.1 percent in Europe and 10.2 percent in the company's Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa segment.

Systemwide sales rose 2.6 percent for the month.

McDonald's said February same-store sales will be hurt by 4 percentage points since February 2008 was a leap year.

McDonald's shares were up 1.4 percent at $59.29 in premarket trade, from their close on Friday at $58.46 on the New York Stock Exchange.
