Markets remain nervous

DUBAI — The UAE markets fell on the last trading day of the week on news that Israel bombed Hezbollah headquarters in south Beirut in a bid to kill the group's leader. The two bourses have been steadily recovering for the last three days after plunging earlier this week since the conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon started last Friday.

The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) Index declined 0.65 per cent to 419.57 points, while the Abu Dhabi Securities Market Index was down 0.82 per cent to 3,493.00 points.

The Emnex Active Market Index, covering both DFM and ADSM, shed over 58 points to 6,452.78 points.

Almost all the UAE key stock market indices suffered losses and the volumes were low, especially in Dubai yesterday.

The total turnover across the UAE two bourses yesterday was Dh463.5 million, with the majority (32) of the stocks out of 49 traded companies declining, while 13 stocks advanced and four remained flat.

The DFM yesterday traded only 34.34 million shares valued at Dh171.857 million in over 3,000 deals. Out of 18 traded stocks, 13 declined, three advanced, and two closed unchanged.

The ADSM continued better compared to Dubai performance both in terms of volumes and the market value yesterday, with a turnover of Dh291.6 million. Over 75.3 million shares changed hands in more than 2,900 deals. Out of 35 traded companies, 23 declined, 10 advanced and two stocks remained flat.

All the NBAD indices suffered losses yesterday, except for the insurance sector index, which jumped 100.37 points or 1.67 per cent to 6,111.60 points as Al Ain Ahlia Insurance and Dubai Islamic Insurance traded at higher levels.

The UAE market benchmark NBAD General Index shed 85.27 points yesterday and closed at 11,157.48 points.

The banking sector sub-index was also down slipping 102.72 points to close at 11,924.52 points, while the service sector index shed 98.68 points to 12,906.53 points.

The NBAD Emirates Stock Markets General Index closed at 4,856.88 points yesterday, down almost 37 per cent.
