This follows Malta's success in the exports of traditional items. Its domestic exports to the UAE doubled since trade promotion activities in the Middle East started in 1989 with main products being foodstuff, printed materials and small machinery. The imports from the UAE to Malta, although small, have also increased significantly with electrical goods being the main product.

Mr Tabone said that Dubai has developed into an economic hub for Maltese traders and similarly, Malta having a geographic position between North Africa and mainland Europe and being a full member of the EU in May 2004, it is only a logical move for the UAE companies to use Malta as a hub to the neighbouring markets.

"I am sure that with Malta entering into the EU next May, and being the southern most EU member that is nearest to the Arabian world, it can only serve as an entry point to the EU trading bloc," he said.

"In the coming months, we intend to enhance our economic relationship with the UAE with participation in a number of trade activities including the visit of two trade delegations on furniture and interior design in October to coincide with Index exhibition, the visit of another delegation on IT in October to coincide with the Gitex exhibition, and the participation of 15 Maltese companies in the Big 5 show from November 29 to December 3," Tabone explained.

The furniture industry in Malta is an advanced industry and a number of Maltese exporters of furniture and interior design are seeking new partners in Dubai through the trade delegation which is arriving here on October 5. The visit coincides with the Index exhibition being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 7 to 12 where a Maltese stand will be present. A delegation of this nature will be coming to Dubai in view of the opportunities offered by the new construction development that is coming up in Dubai, he said.

He said that coinciding with the Gitex exhibition, an IT trade delegation of six companies will be in Dubai from October 19 to 23.
