India's preparations for Dubai’s global event, Expo 2020, are in full swing and the nation's pavilion is slated to be handed over to the Expo team by July.

“The pavilion is almost 75 per cent complete including flooring, utilities, facade and painting. The project management team working on the India pavilion are optimistic of physical completion of the pavilion by the end of April and then works like curation and exhibition-related work will be done. The pavilion will be handed over to the Expo 2020 team by end of July 2021,” said Siddhartha Kumar Baraily, consul in-charge for the India pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The pavilion features a kinetic facade and developed as a mosaic of rotating panels that depict different themes as they rotate on their axis. It represents the theme of “India on the move” and is a unique amalgam of the rich heritage and technological advances of the nation.

It is a state-of-the-art building, one of the largest pavilions at the Expo and one of the three that would remain for posterity as India centres in the legacy phase. The design elements would also reflect the vibrant diversity of India’s rich culture, heritage, thriving business milieu and other aspects.

“The India pavilion will bring to the world the modern India, high on technology and innovations, as it showcases the best from India across all sectors and at the same time brings in the beauty of Indian art, culture and cuisine for the visitors,” added Baraily.

As the country celebrates 75 years of modern India, the pavilion will showcase its rise in the modern world across all sectors and celebrate India@75, sharing the vision for next 75 years.

India will also celebrate its festivals in its sprawling premises and invite all participants as it celebrates Diwali, Lohri, Pongal, Basant Panchami and Holi, among others.

The entire pavilion is divided into two parts: Part A is the India story taking visitors through an experience and understanding of India, while Part B is the business showcase, thematically and by the various different states of India.

City Diamond Contracting (CDC) is developing the concept design received for the India Pavilion and has developed the detail design, engineering and procurement, and construction for the project. The 9,000 square metres structure is one of the largest pavilions and promises to be one of the most dynamic, engaging and sustainable pavilions at the expo.

Deepak Arora, managing director of City Diamond Contracting, said: “The progress at the pavilion is keeping in line with the Expo master programme. The project continues in full swing despite the challenges posed by Covid-19. we are currently on schedule for a fully functional project, ready for the public.”

The project has incorporated several innovative technologies such as underfloor cooling to reduce the air conditioning consumption and provide energy saving; dynamic facade to provide a second skin to further enhance shading to the internal environment. The facade can further create patterns to show India’s rich history and extremely promising future. The special dynamic glass used in pavilion provides zero to ninety nine per cent shading in order to improve the internal habitable space and reduce energy consumption. The shading is done using an electrochromic technology which can be programmed to work along with the angle of sun, time of day or any personal preference of the internal space habitants.
