Financial independence and education will increase women's role in society and they should be allowed to independently operate their bank accounts and make financial decisions in order to empower them practically, leading local and expat women said at a conference on Saturday.
Abha Singh, former bureaucrat and Mumbai High Court lawyer, called on women to empower themselves through education and financial independence.
"To all the women, educate yourself because it will empower you and also gain financial independence. They should have their own bank accounts and learn how to operate in order to have financial freedom. Don't be scared, constitution and public awareness are there for their protection. Another big thing that happened in India was media activism. So, if there is a problem at work place, go and file a case," Singh said on the sidelines of a conference hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India - Dubai chapter - about leadership.
She stressed that safety, education and financial inclusion are highly important for women's empowerment.
During the forum, women from different walks of life shared their success stories.
Dr. Noura Al Hinai, head of operations at Higher College of Technology in Dubai, said the biggest challenge for women is to balance family and work life.
"Women in the UAE are highly empowered because around half of Federal National Council members are women," she said, adding that there are some religious and cultural limitations for women here as some families do not allow their daughters to be seen in media."
Jalpa Vithalani, creative head and director of Cosmic Heart Gallery, said empowering women is key for betterment of the society.
"Women should keep innovating and searching what is unique about them. Women help to change the face of society so it is important to empower them so they become confident," she added.
Vipul, consul-general at the Indian consulate in Dubai; Saud Salim Al Mazrouei, director of Hamriyah Free Zone Authority; and Anish Mehta, chairman of ICAI's Dubai chapter, addressed the conference about the leadership on Saturday.
